This renovation project focuses on transforming a three-story house in the stunning coastal suburb of Collaroy, located in the Northern Beaches, Sydney, Australia, while preserving its original brick exterior. The goal was to completely reimagine the interior spaces while maintaining a strong connection to the ocean views and the natural slope of the land.
The house is organized across three levels: the basement serves as a garage and storage space, the ground floor accommodates the foyer and bedrooms, while the first floor is the social heart of the home, featuring the living room, kitchen, and an outdoor area that opens directly to the garden and new pool. Thanks to the sloping terrain, this upper level connects harmoniously with the outdoor spaces, encouraging indoor-outdoor living.
The south-facing windows offer uninterrupted views of Collaroy Beach and the Pacific Ocean, while north-facing skylights are strategically placed to bring abundant natural light into the main living spaces. The roof has been redesigned with bioclimatic principles in mind, integrating solar panels for sustainable energy use and a rainwater harvesting system for irrigation and other uses.
To capture the relaxed, beachy aesthetic desired by the client, the existing brick structure has been refreshed with a coat of white paint, complemented by light wood accents and soft concrete details. The palette of white, light wood, and greenery creates a calm and welcoming atmosphere.
Landscape design plays a key role, with lush greenery framing both the main entrance and back garden, blending the home seamlessly into its coastal environment. The result is a modern yet cozy coastal retreat that honors its original character while incorporating contemporary design and sustainability.
A coastal transformation, blending ocean views, light, and nature, renewing timeless brick into a serene, modern retreat.
